It's personal.

There was news today that a body has been found at Hanwell near Brentford, and that it may well be that of Alice Gross who has been missing for a month. I hadn't realised how personally I have taken it. I didn't know her or anything about her. About a week after she went missing we arrived at Brentford hoping to head up the Hanwell flight of the Grand Union but we couldn't as the locks were closed whilst the area was searched. The coverage on the TV showed where she was last seen on the CCTV coverage. All this meant that it was a great sadness to hear the news. All my sympathies go to the family and friends of poor Alice. It seems the whole area has come together over her loss so lets hope that it can continue in the future and some good can come out of this tragic event.

Today is the date that the C&RT winter moorings are on sale. They have five month to one month moorings available on the tow path or some on visitor moorings around the place. It is not something I am tempted to do at the moment but it makes you wonder what the winter weather will be like this year. They say that when there are loads of berries there will be a hard winter, so who knows.

There is to be dredging taking place in the Rugby area but before they start they will be moving as many of the fish as possible out of the way. This is required as the dredging stirs up the silt and this restricts the oxygen in the water which could be fatal for them. A floating bucket dredger is to be used an d the spoil moved by barge. I assume that there will times for passing the dredger.

I am looking forward to getting back to the boat and continuing our trip to the north but it does sound as though the weather is finally going to turn cooler and more like normal temperatures. I hope that we don't also return to a biblical type deluge as normally the end of September and early October are fairly settled. We used to take our hire boat holidays at this time of year.

I am trusting your judgement, Tony, re the link between berries and the winter, and between conkers and repelling spiders. Conkers are in place on Waka Huia, and all food that might freeze has been moved up from the bottom shelf or donated to non-boaters. In Scotland this weekend and it is definitely cooler than in the Midlands now. Love to you both, M&D xox
